There are many interesting stories for which Odd Kid
Out serves as a catalyst for discussion. Here are a few that may be of
interest:
1. This is the first documentary film in the world that addresses ADHD
from the point of view of the parent. Director/Producer Karen O'Donnell
received unprecedented access to the most intimate aspects of her subject
families' lives, in larger part due to her own circumstance of having
a son with ADHD. She states, "I didn't choose the subject, the subject
chose me."
2. Parents and teachers are at logger-heads over how to work with ADHD
kids in the classroom, not because teachers are lazy or insensitive, but
to a large degree because of the bureaucracy, policies and financing from
school boards. This film has already been the catalyst for teachers and
parents to see that they are in fact on the same side in lobbying for
change at the school board level - an incredible breakthrough that will
ultimately benefit the kids. The screening at the Bloor Cinema in Toronto
will be the first time all these constituencies gather in one place at
the same time - a powerful opportunity for a reporter to get input from
all these interested parties.
3. On the advice of Clinic Director Dr. Attila Turgay after viewing the
film, the Scarborough Hospital ADHD Clinic has brought more staff on board
for post-TV broadcast, in full anticipation of the reaction from the premiere.
4. The Peel Board of Education is the first Canadian institution to become
A Regional Training Site for Dr. Mel Levine's innovative organization,
All Kinds of Minds (www.allkindsofminds.org),
a non-profit institute for the understanding of differences in learning.
The All Kinds of Minds' mission is to help students who struggle with
learning measurably improve their success in school and life by providing
programs that integrate educational, scientific and clinical expertise.
Dr. Levine appears in the film, and figures prominently in Odd Kid Out.
5. Support groups from across the country as well as in the United States
are already contacting Karen to host screenings in their own communities,
and to address parent and teacher organizations. Based on the incredible
response, the film will be made available on VHS for institutions and
for individuals in February of this year.
