Coping with Special Needs

Unique TVO television-web event helps parents cope with their kids' special needs, Wednesday May 16, 2007, starting at 10 pm

On Wednesday May 16, 2007, starting at 10 pm, TVO presents a unique television-web event that brings to light the challenges parents of special needs kids face as they navigate complex educational and medical institutions, and gives parents direct access to experts in the field who can answer their questions - in REAL time.

The event begins with the 10 pm TVO broadcast of My Different Life, a documentary by filmmaker Karen O'Donnell. The film follows Denise Difide, a single mother desperately trying to get the proper education for her three kids, two of whom cope with a learning disability and the third with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

At approximately 10:50 pm, immediately following My Different Life, Your Voice, TVO's online interactive parenting show at tvoparents.com, presents a special half-hour live webcast discussion featuring Karen O'Donnell and central characters in the documentary.

It provides an excellent vehicle for dialogue on how parents can cope. How can they recognize that their child may have special needs? Where can they get their child tested? How can they ensure their children get the resources they need in school? Parents can watch and participate by sending their questions directly to the guest experts.

They are:

  • Karen O'Donnell (My Different Life, Odd Kid Out) and parent of an ADHD child
  • Dr. Atilla Turgay, child psychiatrist and director of psychiatric research and the ADHD clinic at the Scarborough Hospital
  • Georgina Rayner, a volunteer education advocate and executive committee member of the Centre for ADD/ADHD Advocacy, Canada (CADDAC)

Questions can be submitted online on the Your Voice page at tvoparents.com, or by phone at 1.888.891.1195.

Parents and caregivers can also share their experiences with each other through an online chat.
